Mow Like the Pros
Like traditional riding mowers, zero-turn lawn mowers are designed to cut grass on flatter properties several acres or larger. Unlike your everyday riding mower, however, they feature front caster wheels that can rotate 180 degrees, and you steer one using two lap bars or levers instead of a steering wheel. This gives them a tighter turning radius, making it easier to mow while avoiding trees, shrubs, flower gardens and walkways.
Whether your yard is comprised of smooth turf or loaded with more than a few obstacles, you can find the best zero-turn model for your mowing needs in our stock, which includes:
Electric vs. Gas Mowers
If you’re looking for something quicker and more maneuverable, consider an electric zero-turn mower. These run on brushless motors, so they’re low-noise and emission-free. Many can cut up to two acres on a single charge. To make sure your mower has plenty of juice before it’s time to cut, choose one with a powerful lithium-ion battery and fast charging capability.
A gas zero-turn mower, in contrast, can be more powerful, not to mention offer longer running times, as long as there’s fuel in the tank. One with a single-cylinder engine can work great on smaller, less full-featured lawns up to an acre in size, but if your property is any bigger or hillier, a V-twin or diesel engine with horsepower and torque up to the task is recommended.
Frequently Asked Questions About Zero-Turn Mowers
What size zero-turn mower is right for my yard?
That depends on how large it is and how quickly you want to mow. The larger the lawn, the wider the cutting deck you’ll need, meaning the fewer the passes you should have to make – and the faster you can get the job done. If you expect a longer mowing session, choose a model with comfort features such as a high-back seat, armrests, rubber foot pads, lumbar support and adjustable padded control levers.
What kind of engine the mower has – and how capable it is – are more factors to consider. The bigger the engine is and the more torque it has, the better it'll be at mowing larger spaces with tougher greenery. You should also consider what you plan to do with the mower. To maneuver better across more rugged ground, consider one that can reverse while mowing. If you want to see where you're cutting better or mow under fences or ledges, for instance, go for one with a front-mount deck.
What's the difference between a traditional riding lawn mower and a zero-turn mower?
Zero-turn riding mowers feature hydrostatic transmissions or transaxles, which control their wheels independently, letting them pivot in place (rather than move) to turn. This allows them to mow an area faster, saving you time and effort. In contrast, typical riding mowers require spinning a steering wheel to turn, and they have a much wider turn radius, meaning you may need to make more passes to mow the same space.
