Wood Posts

Whether you’re containing pets or livestock or protecting gardens or orchards, few kinds of enclosures are stronger and longer-lasting than wood fences. To give them solid foundations, you’ll need the right posts. Learn more about them before you start building and find plenty of options at Tractor Supply.

Essential Fence Supports For Life Out Here

Wood posts enable putting up panels or rails for picket, privacy and a variety of other fencing. Use them to mark boundaries on your property for pastures or fields, or rely on them to help raise corrals for cattle or runs for dogs or horses.

Woods to Withstand Weather and Wildlife

The fence posts we stock are typically made of durable softwoods such as cedar, cypress or redwood, which are naturally resistant to rot and insects. Pine and others may need to be pressure-treated to last longer. If you’re looking for something with high durability, consider rugged hardwood such as black locust.

Four Types: Line, Corner, End and Gate Posts

Key to any wood fence is its line posts. Set at regular intervals, they’re used to connect straight sections of the fence. Install corner posts to provide extra support when changing your fence’s direction and put end posts in for boundaries. Raise gate posts to support the fence’s entrance, and these can be corner, end or line posts, depending on its design. You can reinforce two or more of any post using a brace.

What to Know Before Driving a Wood Fence Post

To build wood fencing the right way, you’ll need to dig holes for its posts that are one- third to one-half their height above ground. If you live in an area with high winds, or if you have sandy or frost heave-prone soil, you may have to dig deeper ones. You should set posts six to eight feet apart, generally, although that can vary depending on the type of fence, its height and your local climate and ground conditions. The taller the fence, the closer the spacing should be for stability.
