Speckled Sussex Chickens originated in England around AD 43, making them one of the oldest known breeds, with the speckled variety being recognized around 1914. The speckled coloring of these chickens have dark brown or mahogany colored plumage, with some black and blue feathers tipped with white ends, making the speckles show throughout their plumage. The speckles become more prominent as the chickens molt each year. These curious, mellow chickens are very hardy in winter, do well confined, and are an excellent forager so they also do well free ranged. These calm, beautiful chickens are great show birds that tend to go broody and make wonderful mothers. The size and productivity of these birds make them great dual purpose chickens for your backyard flock.
